Diaphragm

Composition: Latex or silicone dome with flexible metal ring, for use with spermicide or contraceptive gel. A gynecological examination may be required to determine size, although a one-size-fits-all model is available.

How it works: Physical barrier covering the cervix, preventing sperm from reaching the uterus. The spermicide destroys the sperm as it passes through.

Instructions for use: Apply 4 ml of spermicide to the diaphragm, then insert it deep into the vagina to cover the cervix. It can be inserted up to two hours before intercourse. Leave in place for at least 6 hours after intercourse, and remove before 24 hours. Wash with soap and water, then air-dry.

Efficacy: 83 to 90% (with spermicide).

Cost: $80 to $100 for diaphragm, $25 to $30 for spermicide.

Where to get it: Available without prescription, can be ordered via a pharmacist or directly from Canadian distributor Trimedic.
